Is there anyone at NYHHC who can tell me where to take my mother who has dementia and abuses alcohol where she can get properly assessed, receive proper medication based on the diagnosis, and get treated for EVERYTHING? Mom had a four day stay in the detox center at Bellevue (after a four-day stint of drinking). When I took her there and talked with the intake doctor and social worker, I had asked, and they all agreed, that she would stay for detox and somewhere down the line get full physical, blood, psychological and psychiatric testing in the hopes of then perhaps updating her diagnosis and medication, and then look into more permanent proper professional care such as, perhaps, a nursing facility.

With calls at least twice a day to me, Mom complained about the stay as she was not happy with the treatment she was getting by some of the staff. I finally stopped answering the phone when I saw the calls were originating from Bellevue. Then, on Monday I got a call from Robert McClain in the Detox Center stating that they were planning to release Mom and that I had to get down to Bellevue as soon as I could. When I called him back, he stated that his office had looked into 28-day inpatient programs where Mom could go and because she didn’t have Medicaid, some of them were immediately disqualified. But Beth Israel was willing to take her because Medicaid was not necessary and she could use her benefits through Medicare instead. But, he said, I needed to get there immediately so that she would not miss this opportunity and because they wouldn’t directly transfer her there, but rather I needed to pick her up to take her over to Beth Israel.

I hauled ass down there, dropping everything. When I got there, after he brought Mom out and had her sign papers of her discharge and for entrance into Beth Israel, he disclosed that it was not in fact an immediate transfer because Beth Israel didn’t have a bed immediately ready for her, and wouldn't until two or three days later. Of course, I was pissed. But that’s just the beginning. So I took Mom home with the paperwork to follow-up with a Ms. Adela at Beth Israel. When I called her, I got no answer the first day. Yesterday morning I finally reached Ms. Adela, who was clueless about any interactions on behalf of my mom. She stated that she would look to see if there was any paperwork faxed over from Mr. McClain, but that they hadn’t spoken about any details concerning my mom. Within a few hours Ms. Adela called back to say that my mom was not approved for their 28-day inpatient program. So I’m right back where I started.
Yesterday, I came home to find Mom drunk, having ransacked the apartment, bowled over the toilet trying to vomit because she told me she had taken her medication but couldn't recall if she had taken too much and was rising a possible overdose. As a precautionary measure I phoned 911 and requested Harlem Hospital because it was the closest to our home. They kept my Mom approximately 12 hours and at 6:55am released her in the rain -- no detox even, and as the paperwork itself stated from Dr. Johanne Benjamin and PA Lincoln Adeyemi, no tests were performed and no procedures performed. So this 74 year old woman with dementia and delirium tremens from alcohol abused stumbled back home after being released alone.
If there is healthCARE to be found in NYC, someone please advise because it is CLEARLY not at Bellevue or Harlem Hospital.
